Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sisyrinchium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sisyrinchium (1538 or earlier) < classical Latin sisyrinchion plant with an edible bulb or corm, perhaps Moraea sisyrinchium (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek σισυρίγχιον (Theophrastus), of unknown origin.
1. A Mediterranean plant with an edible bulblike corm, the Barbary nut or Spanish nut, Moraea sisyrinchium (family Iridaceae); (with modifying word) any of several plants similar to this. Obsolete. rare.
