Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sitio-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sitio- (formations in which are found from the 18th cent., e.g. sitiologia : see sitiology n. ) < ancient Greek σιτίον food made from grain, bread ( < σῖτος grain, food made from grain, bread (see sito- comb. form) + -ίον , suffix forming nouns); compare -o- connective. Compare sito- comb. form.Compare French sitio- (formations in which are found from the early 19th cent.). Found in a small number of formations from the late 18th cent., exemplified below. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
