Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin acephalus , -ist suffix; Greek ἀκέϕαλος , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin acephalus or its etymon ancient Greek ἀκέϕαλος (see acephalous adj.) + -ist suffix. Compare earlier acephal n., acephali n., and slightly later Acephalian n.
1. A person who acknowledges no head or superior. Obsolete.
