Etymology: In α. forms < an element of uncertain origin (perhaps slatter v.3, although this is apparently first attested later) + an apparently arbitrary element (see note) + pouch n. In β. forms < the same first element + pouch n.Compare clatter-de-pouch (1651), clutterdepouch n. at clutter n. Compounds, and clapperdepouch (1682), in similar uses (each apparently attested in only one text). With the medial element of the α. forms perhaps further compare French de de prep., and perhaps any or all of cockle-de-moy n., flipper-de-flapper n., lege de moy n., rumble-de-thumps n., or simper-de-cocket n.
Obsolete. rare.
