Etymology: < Spanish acequia irrigation channel (1113; also †azequia (1124), †açequia (c1196), †asequia (a1454); many examples in early use show borrowing of the Spanish word into post-classical Latin) < Arabic al-sāqiya < al- the + sāqiya sakia n. Compare Catalan séquia (end of the 11th cent.), Portuguese acéquia (1140; also †cequia (13th cent.)). The β. forms reflect the Spanish (now regional and American) variant cequia, †zequia (both 1154; also †sequia (1259)), which may either show a borrowing of the Arabic word without the Arabic definite article, or result from attraction of the initial vowel of the Spanish word to a preceding feminine definite article (la acequia > la cequia).
