Etymology: Representing either Old English slítan (slát, etc.) or Old Norse slíta (Icelandic slíta, Norwegian and Swedish slita, Danish slide), corresponding to Old Frisian slîta (West Frisian slite), Middle Dutch slīten (Dutch slijten), Old Saxon slîtan (Middle Low German and Low German slîten), Old High German slîzan (German schleissen). Common in Old English, but rare in the later language; the modern dialect past participle slitten is now associated with slit v.
Now rare or Obsolete.
