单词 slobberhannes
释义

slobberhannesn.

Brit. /ˈslɒbəˌhanᵻs/, U.S. /ˌslɑbərˈhɑnəs/, /ˈslɑbərˌhænz/
Forms: 1800s schlapperhannes (in sense 1), 1800s– slobberhannes, 1900s schlabberhannes, 2000s– slobberhans, 2000s– slobberhantes (U.S. regional (Midland) in sense 2.).
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from German. Etymons: German Schlabberhannes, Schlapperhannes.
Etymology: Apparently < German regional (chiefly northern) Schlabberhannes, Schlapperhannes (also Schlabberhans ) sloppy eater, slovenly person, blabbermouth (1820 or earlier; < schlabbern to slobber (see slabber v.) + Hans , Hannes , pet form of the male forename Johannes : see Hans n., John n.), with remodelling of the first element within English by association with slobber v. Although the German word is apparently not attested denoting a game, it probably also showed such use, like its parallel Dutch regional (Zeeland) slabberjan a game played with wooden counters (18th cent.: see note; < slabberen slabber v. + the Dutch male forename Jan : see John n.).The fact that German Hans, Hannes and Dutch Jan are pet forms of the same name (corresponding with English John) would have been recognized by speakers of both languages along the Dutch-German border, and probably also more widely. The Dutch game of slabberjan is played with turned wooden pieces similar to chess pawns, each bearing an image or number on its base, according to rules similar to those of various European card games, from which it is thought to have developed.
Chiefly North American.
1. A card game, typically played by four people, in which the object is to avoid taking the first and last tricks and any trick containing the queen of clubs. Also in early use: a (penalty) point in this game earned by a player who takes all three of the tricks to be avoided.
