Etymology: < black adj. + winged adj.1 In sense 2 partly after scientific Latin melanopterus (frequently from 1758 as a specific name; < ancient Greek μελανόπτερος ), and partly after scientific Latin nigripennis (frequently from 1773 as a specific name; < nigri- nigri- comb. form + classical Latin penna feather: see pen n.3).
