Etymology: Middle English bleik , < Old Norse bleikr shining, pale, cognate with Old English blác , Old Saxon blêc (Middle Dutch bleec , Dutch bleek ), Old High German bleih (Middle High German and modern German bleich ) < Germanic *blaiko-z , < the stem of blîkan , past tense blaik , to shine.
