Etymology: < smart adj. + -ish suffix1. H. Hexham Groot Woorden-boeck (1648) has ‘Smertigh , Smartish, or Full of Paine’, in which smartish apparently shows a formation < smart n.1 + -ish suffix1, perhaps coined in order to provide a gloss for Dutch smartig, †smertigh painful.
