单词 snaphance
释义

snaphancen.

/ˈsnaphɑːns//ˈsnaphans/
Forms: α. 1500s–1600s snaphanse, 1500s–1600s, 1800s snaphance (1500s snapphance), 1600s snaphanch; 1500s–1600s, 1800s snap-hance; 1600s snap hance, snap hans. β. 1500s–1600s snap-haunse, 1500s–1600s, 1800s snaphaunce; 1600s snap-haunce, 1600s, 1800s snap-haunch; 1500s snap haunce.
Etymology: Of Continental origin, representing Dutch and Flemish snaphaan (in Kilian snap-haen ), Middle Low German snaphân , Low German snapphân , German schnapphahn (†-han ), < snappen , schnappen snap v. + haan, hahn cock. It is not quite clear whether the sense is ‘snapping cock’ or ‘cock-snapper’ (i.e. cock-stealer). In English the second element may have been confused with the personal name Hans; but Heyne (in Grimm's Dict.) cites an early example of German schnaphons.
Now historical.
