Etymology: Cognate with Old Frisian smithe (West Frisian smidte ), Old Dutch smiththa (Middle Dutch smisse , smitse , Dutch smidse ), Old Saxon smiða (Middle Low German smede , smedde ), Old High German smiththa , smidda , Old Icelandic smiðja (see smithy n.) < the same Germanic base as smith n. and smith v.Compare also ( < the same Germanic base) Old Frisian smitte , smitta (West Frisian smitte ), Middle Dutch smitte , smit , Old High German smitta , smitte , smitti (Middle High German smitte , German regional Schmitte ), and further Old High German smida (German †smide , †schmide , now Schmiede ). The β. forms (with internal -e- ) may reflect association with smith v. (compare β. forms at that entry).
Obsolete.
