A white-flowered perennial plant of woodlands in eastern North America, Sanguinaria canadensis (family Papaveraceae), having a rhizome which yields an acrid red juice, used medicinally and for producing a red dye; also called red puccoon. Also: a medicinal preparation made from the rhizome of this plant, used chiefly as a stimulant or purgative.
