Etymology: < bloody adj. + the female forename Mary (see Mary n.1).In sense 1 with allusion to the series of religious persecutions which took place during Mary Tudor's reign as she attempted to re-establish Catholicism in England. Sense 2 shows a transferred use, with allusion to the red colour of the drink.
