Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Socinismus ; proper name Socinius , -ism suffix.
Etymology: Either (i) < post-classical Latin Socinismus (1624 in a work title, or earlier; < the surname of Laelius and Faustus Socinius (see Socinian n.) + -ismus -ism suffix), or independently (ii) < the surname of Laelius and Faustus Socinius (see Socinian n.) + -ism suffix. Compare earlier Socinianism n.
