Etymology: < sonic adj. + -ator suffix. Compare sonicated adj., sonication n., and slightly later sonicate n., sonicate v.
Chiefly Biochemistry and Chemistry.
An apparatus used to treat a sample solution with ultrasonic waves, esp. in order to break down macromolecules, disrupt cell membranes, disperse materials, or initiate reactions. Also: an apparatus that uses ultrasound to remove particles of dirt or contaminants from a solid surface.Sonicators typically take two forms: probes which are inserted into a sample solution, or water baths in which samples or items are placed.
