单词 sodom
释义

Sodomn.

Brit. /ˈsɒdəm/, U.S. /ˈsɑdəm/
Forms: 1500s–1600s Sodome, 1500s– Sodom.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Sodom.
Etymology: < Sodom (Hebrew Sĕḏōm; compare Hellenistic Greek Σόδομα (Septuagint), post-classical Latin Sodoma, neuter plural and feminine singular (Vulgate)), the name of an early city beside the Dead Sea, the wickedness and destruction of which are recorded in Genesis 18–19.The biblical place name is attested in English from the Old English period onwards (Old English Sodoma, Sodome, Middle English Sodom, Sodome, Sodoma, Sodomas).
A place likened to the city of Sodom in being extremely or notoriously depraved. Also Sodom and Gomorrah (see Gomorrhean adj. and n.).In the biblical account, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed by fire and brimstone sent by God because of the inhabitants' incorrigible wickedness. In a number of biblical passages, it is suggested that their vices include, amongst other things, sexual depravity of various kinds. However, in the many terms etymologically related to the name of the city (see, for example, sodomy n.), the association of Sodom primarily with homosexual practices seems to rest solely on Genesis 19:5, in which the inhabitants, according to some interpretations, seek to abuse sexually the two angels who are guests of Lot.
