单词 sodom apple
释义

Sodom applen.

Brit. /ˈsɒdəm ˌapl/, U.S. /ˈsɑdəm ˌæpəl/
Forms:

α. see Sodom n. and apple n.

β. 1800s Sodom's apple.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Sodom n., apple n.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < Sodom n. + apple n.; partly (in β. forms) < the genitive of Sodom n. + apple n.The association of the fruit described at sense 1a with the city of Sodom may be traced back at least as far as Josephus. Compare the following:1602 T. Lodge tr. Josephus Lamentable Hist. Wars of Iewes v. v, in tr. Josephus Wks. 688 The land of Sodome and Gomorrah, sometime both fertile and rich: now all burnt, being (as it is reported) for the impietie of the inhabitants consumed with lightning and thunder. To be short, one may here behold as it were the signe and reliques of that fire, that by Gods appointment destroied the place: for one may yet see as it were the fashion and tokens of fiue cities, and trees & fruits springing vp in the ashes: which fruit to the eye seemeth like vnto other fruits; but if you handle them they fall into ashes, and smoake.
1.
a. A fruit (now usually identified with that of the mudar, Calotropis procera (family Apocynaceae)) which, according to legend, appears tempting but dissolves into smoke and ashes when grasped. Frequently figurative: something which does not live up to expectations. Cf. apple of Sodom n. (a) at apple n. Phrases 3f, Dead Sea apple n. at Dead Sea n. Compounds.
