1. Originally: moisture-rich maize kernels, esp. from cobs harvested before full maturity. In later use also: maize kernels which lack horny endosperm; any of the cultivated varieties of maize producing such kernels.The group of cultivated varieties of maize producing kernels without horny endosperm is often called Zea mays convar. amylacea.
