Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) < Somal, formerly occasionally used as a name for the region in the Horn of Africa (although this is apparently first attested later in English contexts: 1857 as the Somaul ; compare French le Somal (1841 or earlier), Arabic al-Ṣūmāl : see Somalian adj.), or perhaps (ii) an alteration of Somali n. or Somali adj., perhaps after -al suffix1.
