Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: English Sophie's Choice.
Etymology: < the title of the 1982 film Sophie's Choice, based on the 1979 novel of the same name by American author William Styron (1925–2006).
A situation in which a person is forced to make a difficult choice between two (or more) valued or deserving alternatives; a dilemma which cannot be resolved without making an undesirable sacrifice. to make a Sophie's choice: to choose between such options.From a scene in the novel and film Sophie's Choice, in which the main character, on her arrival at Auschwitz, is forced by a guard to choose which of her two children will live, and which will be sent to the gas chamber.
