Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse *soht.
Etymology: < Old Norse *soht (later sótt , Icelandic and Faroese sótt , Norwegian sott , Swedish and Danish sot ), = Gothic sauhts , Old Saxon suht (hence once in Old English), Old High German and Middle High German suht (German sucht ), Dutch zucht : compare also Old East Frisian secht , Old West Frisian siochte . The stem suh- , suk- is an ablaut-variant of seuk- : see sick adj.
