Etymology: < the name of Michael Somogyi (1883–1971), Hungarian-born U.S. biochemist who proposed the unit in 1948 (see quot.).
Biochemistry.
A unit in terms of which the effectiveness of a solution at catalysing the hydrolysis of starch can be stated (see quot. 1948).
