Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish son jarocho.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish son jarocho (1916 or earlier) < son son n.2 + jarocho of, relating to, or originating in Veracruz state on the east coast of Mexico (1918 or earlier as adjective; 1806 or earlier as noun in sense ‘native or inhabitant of Veracruz state’), further etymology uncertain (perhaps compare Spanish jarocho peasant (19th cent.), also of uncertain and disputed origin).
A style of Mexican son folk music originating in Veracruz state in eastern Mexico (see son n.2 1); a song in this style.
