Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sonāre , -ancy suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin sonāre to sound (see sound v.1) + -ancy suffix. Compare earlier sonance n. and the post-classical Latin form cited at that entry, and also earlier sonant adj.
Chiefly Phonetics.
The quality of being sonant (sonant adj. 2).
