Etymology: < German Sonderweg (typically figuratively) separate way, path, or route (mid 19th cent. in various contexts, including politics and historiography, mid 20th cent. or earlier with specific reference to 19th and 20th cent. German history) < sonder- separate, special (see sunder adj.) + Weg way n.1 Compare French sonderweg (1955 or earlier).The German word appears to have entered political discourse in the wake of the revolutions of 1848, initially with explicit reference to these events.
A distinct course of development or action followed by a particular nation or people (originally and chiefly with reference to Germany and German-speaking peoples).Originally referring to a theory that the historical development of Germany and German-speaking peoples followed a course distinct from that of other countries in Europe.Not fully naturalized in English.
