Etymology: Apparently < a first element reflected by early modern English songe (late 16th cent., cited in a Dutch context in Kiliaan), English regional (Devon) sang , (Cornwall) zang handful of corn, sheaf (both 19th cent. or earlier: see note) + -le suffix 1. Compare early modern German sangel ear of corn (1584; German (regional) Sangel handful of gleaned corn). Compare earlier songow v. Compare also earlier single n. 2.The first element is apparently cognate with Middle Dutch sange handful of (gleaned) corn (Dutch regional (southern and south-eastern) zange), Middle Low German sange, Old High German sanga sheaf (Middle High German sange sheaf, German (now regional: western) sange handful of gleaned corn), further etymology unknown.
