单词 spain
释义

Spainn.

Brit. /speɪn/, U.S. /speɪn/
Forms: α. Middle English–1600s Spaine, Spayne, Middle English Spaigne, Middle English Speyne, 1500s Espayne, 1500s– Spain; Middle English–1500s Scottish Spane. β. ScottishMiddle English Spanȝhe, Middle English–1500s Spanȝe, 1500s Spanȝie, Spaneȝe, Spangyie, 1800s Spainyie; Middle English–1500s Spenȝe, 1500s Spenȝee, Spenȝie, Speinȝie, 1800s Spengyie.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman Espayne, Espaigne (modern French Espagne, = Spanish España, Portuguese Hespanha, Italian Spagna) < late Latin Spānia (Greek Σπανία) for earlier Hispānia (Ispānia). The usual form in Old English is Ispania, but in the dative plural the aphetic forms Spenum and Spaneum occur. The dropping of the initial vowel of Old French Espaigne is in accordance with English usage: compare Middle Dutch Spaengen, -gien (Dutch Spanje), Middle High German Spanje, Spangen- (German Spanien), Old Norse Spánn (and Spánland). The later Scots forms show the usual change of into ngy or ng.
