A Caribbean dance of African origin, typically performed at a wake by male dancers who form a circle and take turns to execute energetic and nimble hopping and kicking moves with arms outstretched. Frequently attributive.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish bongó.
Etymology: Apparently < Cuban Spanish bongó (although this is first attested later: 1938 or earlier), of uncertain origin, perhaps < an African language, or perhaps imitative of the sound of the instrument.
Usually in plural. Either of a joined pair of small deep-bodied drums of a kind originating in Cuba, typically held between the knees and played by striking with the fingers and palms. Also more fully bongo drum.

Etymology: < Swahili Bongo, a nickname for Dar es Salaam, the most populous city of Tanzania, and also (by extension) for Tanzania as a whole ( < bongo brain, intelligence). With sense 2 compare slightly earlier Bongo Flava n.
