Etymology: < sparrow n.: compare sparhawk n. So Swedish sparfhök, Norwegian dialect sporvehauk.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈsparrow-hawk.

a. A species of hawk ( Accipiter nisus) which preys on small birds, common in the British Islands and widely distributed in northern Europe and Asia. Occasionally, one or other species of hawk resembling this.
