Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French bonifier.
Etymology: < Middle French, French bonifier to make better, improve (1549 or earlier), to do good to (late 16th cent. in the passage translated in quot. 1603), to give a bonus to (1712) < Italian bonificare to make better, improve (especially land) (16th cent.), to give a bonus to (1707) < post-classical Latin bonificare to improve, to benefit (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < bonificus (attested in a glossary), alteration (after classical Latin bonus good: see bonus n.) of classical Latin beneficus benefic adj.; compare -fy suffix. With sense 2 compare slightly earlier bonification n.In quot. 1654 at sense 2 rendering Hebrew yāṭaḇ to make good, improve ( < ṭōḇ good: see mazeltov n.); in quot. 1678 translating Hellenistic Greek ἀγαθοποιεῖν, lit. ‘to make good’ ( < ἀγαθός good + ποιεῖν to make). In sense 3 perhaps after bonification n. 2.
