Forms: α. Middle English spervyr, spervier, speruer, Middle English–1600s (1800s) sperver, 1500s spurver. β. Middle English–1600s (1800s) sparver, Middle English Scottish sparwort, 1500s sparuiour, sparuer, sparvill, 1500s–1600s sparvar.
Etymology: < Old French espervier (esprevier ) ‘l'ensemble des pièces qui composent le coucher’ (1380 in Godefroy), = obsolete Italian sparviere , -eri , -ero . The forms are those of the Old French and Italian names for the sparrow-hawk (see sperver n.), but the connection is not obvious.
