Forms: 1900s– speculaas, 1900s– speculoos, 1900s– spekulaas, 1900s– spekuloos.
Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Dutch speculaas, speculoos.
Etymology: < Dutch speculaas, regional (Belgium) speculoos (late 19th cent. or earlier), variants of speculatie flat spiced biscuits in the shape of figures or images, (formerly also) colourful sweets with images on icing (both 18th cent.), of uncertain origin, perhaps a specific use of speculatie observation, reflection, imagination, (formerly also) well-being (see speculation n.), although the semantic motivation is debated. Compare ( < Dutch) French regional (Walloon) spéculos, spéculoos (1925), (Montois) spéculation (1870), German Spekulatius (1848 or earlier, originally regional (western)), all denoting a kind of spiced biscuit, and also German regional (Low German: East Friesland) Spekelaatsje kind of sweet with coloured icing (1857 or earlier). For a fuller discussion of the etymology, including alternative suggestions, see F. De Tollenaere 1983 (in Neuphilologische Mitteilungen, 522–30). Compare the following slightly earlier example of Dutch speculaas in an English context:1896 Report on Condition of Trade, Shipping, & Industry 243 For Brussels and Antwerp they made and delivered two steam-power engines for making ʻspeculaasʼ (a sort of biscuits).
