Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin spermaceti.
Etymology: < classical Latin spermaceti (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin sperma sperm n. + cētī , genitive singular of cētus whale (see cete n.1), so called as the substance is extracted from the head of the sperm whale and because it resembles sperm in appearance. Compare parmacety n.Compare Middle French, French spermaceti (1509), Italian spermaceti (1598 in Florio), Spanish espermaceti (1699 or earlier), Portuguese espermacete (1697 or earlier). With the β. forms compare forms with -a- at sperm n.
1. A fatty substance, which in a purified state has the form of a soft white scaly mass, found in the head (and to some extent in other parts) of the sperm-whale ( Physeter macrocephalus) and some other whales and dolphins; it is used largely in various medicinal preparations, and in the manufacture of candles.
