An instrument or device consisting of a sealed transparent tube filled with alcohol or other liquid and containing an air bubble whose position shows whether the device is horizontal.The tube has a slight curvature or swelling to provide a high point at which the bubble rests when the device is exactly horizontal. If the device is not horizontal, the bubble is displaced in position by a distance dependent on the degree of inclination.rare in North American use.
