Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bone n.2, ace n.1
Etymology: Apparently < bone n.2 (although this is first attested later) + ace n.1 Compare to carry the bone at bone n.2 and the discussion at that entry.
Now chiefly historical.
More fully one-and-thirty bone ace. A form of the card game thirty-one (thirty-one n.), in which the third card dealt to each player is turned up, and the player who holds the highest wins a prize, variously stated to be either a counter (counter n.3 1b) or the ‘bone’ (that is, half the stake: see bone n.2). Also: the ace of hearts or diamonds, designated as the highest card in the game. Cf. one-and-thirty n. at one adj., n., and pron. Compounds 4.
