Etymology: < Latin spondēus, also spondæus (sc. pes), < Greek σπονδεῖος, < σπονδή solemn drink-offering; or < French spondée (= Italian spondeo, Spanish espondeo, Portuguese espondeo).
1. Prosody. A metrical foot consisting of two long syllables. Also attributive.
