Any of various boys or men who wear blue clothing, or a blue uniform, livery, etc. (cf. blue adj. 5); esp. a boy who attends a blue coat school or similar charitable institution (now chiefly historical). Cf. blue coat n. Compounds 2.In quot. 1798 (and subsequently) as the title given to a well-known portrait of a boy in a blue suit, by Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88); cf. Gainsborough n. 1.
