Etymology: < blue adj. + ensign n. Compare Red Ensign n.
1. British. Nautical. Originally: the ensign of the Blue Squadron of the Royal Navy. Later: the ensign flown by naval auxiliary vessels and by ships belonging to certain yacht clubs. Cf. Red Ensign n. 1.The Blue Ensign consists of a blue flag with a Union Jack in the top corner near the hoist.
