单词 blue hen
释义

blue henn.

Brit. /ˈbluː hɛn/, U.S. /ˈblu ˌhɛn/
Forms: Frequently with capital initials.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: blue adj., hen n.1
Etymology: < blue adj. + hen n.1Apparently originally (in sense 1a) in allusion to a breed of chicken having blue plumage notable for its ferocity (especially in cockfights), hence applied to formidable (human) fighters. Sense 1b apparently originated as a specific application of this use, apparently originally as the nickname of a particular unit in the American revolutionary war (compare quot. 1840 at sense 1b), although contemporary evidence for this is lacking. Sense 2 apparently arose from sense 1b.
