Etymology: Italian, past participle of staccare, shortened form of distaccare : see detach v.
Music.
1. Detached, disconnected, i.e. with breaks between successive notes. Used adj. or adv. as a direction to a performer to render a passage in this style; also as n., a succession of disconnected notes. Also in extended use in all these uses.
