Etymology: Apparently a variant of either sprent v. or sprint v. with unexplained development of the stem vowel. Compare sprunt n.1 and sprunt adj. See also sprunt v.2 N.E.D. (1915) gives the pronunciation as (sprɒnt) /sprʌnt/.
Obsolete (in later use English regional (northern and midlands) and Scottish).
