单词 st brunos lily
释义

St Bruno's lilyn.

Brit. /ˌseɪnt ˌbruːnəʊz ˈlɪli/, U.S. /ˌseɪnt ˌbrunoʊz ˈlɪli/
Forms: 1700s St. Bruno's lilly, 1700s– Saint Bruno's lily, 1700s– St. Bruno's lily, 2000s– St Bruno's lily.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: proper name St Bruno , lily n.
Etymology: < the genitive of the name of St Bruno of Cologne (c1030–1101), founder of the Carthusian Order + lily n., after French lis de saint Bruno (1694 or earlier). The plant is not found as a traditional attribute of the saint, who is usually depicted with a globe surmounted by a cross, or gazing at a skull. It may have been so called because it grows in the vicinity of the monastery of La Grande Chartreuse; it has also been suggested that the name may allude to St Bruno's purity of life and to his accomplishment of turning a wasteland into a garden when founding La Grande Chartreuse.
A perennial rhizomatous plant with grass-like leaves and a raceme of white, bell-shaped flowers, Paradisea liliastrum (family Asparagaceae), native to alpine regions of southern Europe; (also) a flower stalk of this plant.
