staminn.

Etymology: Early Middle English stamin (= Anglo-Latin staminum ) < Old French estamin (not in Godefroy before 16th cent.), parallel with estamine (12th cent.; hence modern French étamine ), apparently a derivative (with suffix -in , -ine ) of estame < Latin stāmina plural, warp threads (see stamen n.). The other Romance languages have in the same sense a cognate word of differing formation: Provençal estamenha , Portuguese estamenha , Spanish estameña , Catalan estamenya < Latin stāminea feminine of stāmineus adjective, < stāmin- stamen n. Medieval Latin had stāminea, -eum, stāmen, a rough woollen undergarment worn by monks.
Obsolete.
1.
a. A coarse cloth of worsted; in earliest use usually an under garment made of this worn by ascetics. Cf. stammel n.1 1.
