Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek στιχηρόν.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek στιχηρόν versicle, use as noun (short for τροπάριον στιχηρόν troparion sung after a verse (or verses) of a psalm) of στιχηρός composed in verse, set out like poetry, in verses < ancient Greek στίχος line, verse (see stichos n.) + -ηρος, extended form of -ρος, suffix forming adjectives.
Orthodox Church.
A type of liturgical hymn or troparion (troparion n. 2), sung during the morning and evening services in the Orthodox Church, typically in alternation with verses from the psalms.
