Also with lower-case initial
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Pali. Partly a borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Pali bodhisatta, Sanskrit bodhisattva.
Etymology: Partly (i) (in α. and γ. forms) < Pali bodhisatta, literally ‘(someone) with enlightenment as essence’ (also with vernacular pronunciation bodhisat ) < bodhi (in Buddhism) enlightenment (ultimately < Sanskrit budh- to be awake, attentive: see Buddha n.) + satta true essence ( < Sanskrit sattva true essence: see sattva n.), and partly (ii) (in β. forms) < Buddhist Sanskrit bodhisattva < Pali bodhisatta, with remodelling of the second element after Sanskrit sattva. The forms Bhooddhisat at α. forms and Buddhisatwa at β. forms show alteration of the first element by (erroneous) association with Buddha n.
1. Buddhism. A being who has resolved to achieve enlightenment and become a Buddha; spec. (a) (in Mahayana Buddhism) a being who is near to achieving personal enlightenment and attaining nirvana but who has delayed this and vowed instead to achieve enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings out of compassion for their suffering; (b) (in Theravada Buddhism) a title applied to Siddhārtha Gautama and other Buddhas with reference to the period before they achieved enlightenment.
