Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Or perhaps a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: state v., -ed suffix1; Latin status , -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Probably partly < state v. + -ed suffix1, and partly (in early use) < classical Latin status appointed, fixed, regular (see state adj.) + -ed suffix1. Compare slightly earlier state adj.
1. Regular or predictable in action, operation, or occurrence; consistent; invariable. Obsolete.Common in 18th cent.
