Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on two Latin lexical items. Etymons: standard n., wing n.
Etymology: < standard n. (compare standard n. 7) + wing n. Originally after scientific Latin Semioptera, genus name ( < ancient Greek σημεῖον sign, military standard (see semiotic adj.) + πτερόν wing: see ptero- comb. form); compare quot. 1859 at standard n. 7. In use with reference to the standardwing nightjar (compare 2 and standard-winged adj.) probably after scientific Latin vexillarius, specific name (1838 or earlier; < classical Latin vexillārius standard-bearer: see vexillary n.).In Wallace's standardwing after the scientific Latin binomial Semioptera wallacii (G. R. Gray 1859), so named with reference to Alfred Russel Wallace, who encountered the bird in the Bacan Islands in 1858.
1. More fully standardwing bird of paradise. A bird of paradise native to Indonesia, Semioptera wallacii, having brown plumage with (in the male) a blue-green breast shield and two pairs of white elongated wing feathers (see standard n. 7). Also called Wallace's standardwing.
