Etymology: < standing adj. + stone n. Compare longstone n. at long adj.1 and n.1 Compounds 4a.In early use apparently only attested in use with reference to specific standing stones as boundary markers in early charter bounds, frequently in a Latin context. Earlier currency is perhaps implied by the (11th-cent.) composition date of quot. c1261.
A tall upright monumental stone erected in prehistoric times esp. in Great Britain, Ireland, and north-western Europe; a menhir, monolith.On early use see etymological note.
