单词 standish
释义

standishn.

Brit. /ˈstandɪʃ/, U.S. /ˈstændɪʃ/
Forms:

α. Middle English standys, Middle English stantis, Middle English stantys, Middle English staundische, Middle English staundys, Middle English stonndis, Middle English stontys, Middle English–1500s standisshe, Middle English–1500s standyshe, 1500s standyche, 1500s standysshe, 1500s–1600s standishe, 1500s– standish, 1700s–1800s stand-dish.

β. 1600s standage, 1600s standege, 1700s standidge; also Scottish pre-1700 standag.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: stand v., stand n.1, -ish suffix1.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < either stand v. or stand n.1 + -ish suffix1. Although it has often been suggested that the second element is dish n., evidence for use of dish n. in the sense ‘tray or table’ is lacking. The form stand-dish at α. forms probably reflects a later rationalization. Compare stanty n.The β. forms apparently show suffix substitution (see -age suffix), perhaps developed from forms with voicing of the final sibilant.
